Why is Sen. Kyrsten Sinema leaving the Democratic Party?

Source: Arizona Secretary of State

  1. Summary
Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema announced she is leaving the Democratic Party to be an independent, just days after Georgia's runoff election gave the Democrats a 51-49 Senate majority. The Democrats still hold a slim majority in the Senate despite her defection, provided Vice President Harris acts as a tie-breaker. It is not yet clear if Sen. Sinema will still caucus with the Democrats like fellow independent Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Sen. Sinema said she was registering as an independent because the two parties have become too extreme and she would better represent Arizona citizens. Her 2018 election was the first time a Democrat won an Arizona Senate seat in over 30 years.

Many analysts have characterized her move as political. She has been expected to face a tough primary challenge if she runs for re-election, which she has not confirmed she will do. If she seeks re-election as an independent, Democrats will have to risk the GOP winning the Senate seat due to voters splitting between Sen. Sinema and the Democratic candidate.

Is the U.S. right to trade Viktor Bout for Brittney Griner?

Context: US-Russia prisoner swap trades WNBA star for Russian arms dealer.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Some say other Americans (including a former US Marine) were more “deserving” of a swap. That argument misses the point. My objection is not based on valuing one life over the life of another. Brittney was imprisoned as a political pawn for minor possession charges and should have never been imprisoned. My objection to the swap practice is that it invites any foreign adversary to scoop up an unsuspecting American and obtain a swap for a much higher-risk detainee imprisoned in the US.

Yes - Bout's ability to deal in arms has been severely hampered by being in prison for 10 years. The world has moved on from him. Although ...

Unsure - On the surface it certainly appears that Russia got the better deal. If nothing else, the optics of putting a basketball player above a military...
