Why did a man attack police in Times Square?

Source: Our World in Data

  1. Summary
A 19-year-old man wielding a machete attacked and injured three New York City police officers in Times Square on New Year's Eve. Authorities say Trevor Bickford traveled to the city by train days before the attack. He is from Maine. All three officers were initially hospitalized, and all three were released on Sunday. Bickford was shot in the shoulder by police and hospitalized.

Bickford may potentially face terrorism charges. Authorities recovered his backpack after the attack, which contained a journal in which he said he expected to die in his attack and wanted an Islamic burial. He also left a message for his mother before the attack, in which he said he hoped she would repent for Allah.

Bickford, who appears to be white, converted to Islam about 18 months ago. His mother and aunt had previously told the police they were worried about his connection to Islamic extremism. He was once an honor roll student, but reportedly changed after his father died.

Should police use genetic genealogy in violent crime investigations more often?

431 votes, 34 comments

Context: Police make arrest over Idaho college murders partially because of genetic genealogy technique.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Any way to investigate that is lawful should be used for violent crime. However, genetic genealogy should be viewed as extremely extenuating and circumstantial. It's quite a stretch to call findings of this technique 'evidence'. It's roughly the same as saying 'we know he/she was in the same town, so he/she technically could have been there and done it.' It proves not a thing. But it can be the first arrow for the police to use to get an investigation going. Maybe it leads to something, maybe not. Just another tool of their trade.
