Why did prosecutors want leaders of the Gov. Whitmer kidnapping plot to get life sentences?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Two men instrumental to the 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer were sentenced to lengthy prison terms at recent hearings. Adam Fox, 39, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Tuesday. Co-conspirator Barry Croft Jr, 47, was sentenced to 19 years on Wednesday.

Prosecutors requested life sentences for both men, arguing it would be a good deterrent amid a recent increase in extremism. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler said Fox would probably be even "more dangerous" once out of prison. Of Croft, he said "He hasn’t changed his viewpoint [...] He’s not admitting the ideas are wrong because he still holds them."

Legal experts said the prison terms are still substantial. "A life sentence is pretty difficult to achieve in case like this where nobody was physically harmed," a former assistant U.S. attorney told Detroit News. "When you look at a bigger scale at the rise in political violence over the last several years [...] it represents the longest sentence in the country for this sort of violent political extremism."

Context: Wealth of world's billionaires declines in 2022.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Many governmental policies have worked to keep inflation of survival level goods - food, clothing, etc. at low levels, while inflation on everything else rose. This allowed companies to keep wages low compared to profits. Poor people more and more can only afford food and clothes as a result. Due to low wages, they cannot make meaningful changes to their investments. If milk was 30$ a gallon, but pay had risen to keep things affordable, houses would have remained affordable, too.
