  1. Summary
Four electrical substations near Tacoma, Washington were vandalized over the holidays, leaving 14,000 people without power on Christmas Day. Authorities say three energy facilities were broken into and some equipment was damaged. A fire was set at the fourth substation.

Power has since been restored to most of the affected homes. Police say they do not know yet if the attacks were coordinated. “At this time deputies are conducting the initial investigation. We do not have any suspects in custody,” Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said. “It is unknown if there are any motives."

A similar incident occurred earlier this month in North Carolina, where power was knocked out for 40,000 people after two substations were attacked with gunfire. The motive remains unknown, and no suspects have been identified. Shortly before that attack, the FBI had warned power companies of a threat posed by "racially or ethnically motivated" extremists who intend to create civil unrest by targeting critical infrastructure.

Should companies be made to automatically enroll workers in their retirement plans?

352 votes, 35 comments

Context: Recently-passed spending bill includes measure that mandates auto-enrollment for companies offering retirement plans.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - [About] 70% of employers already use auto-enrollment for their retirement plans. That's more than double what it was a decade ago when behavioral economists (Thaler in particular) began to push for auto-enrollment as a solution to the epidemic of low retirement savings in the United States. That increase in the popularity of auto-enrollment has led to a huge increase in retirement savings, meaning that more Americans will be ready for retirement when the time comes. I see no reason why we shouldn't use legislation to increase that to 100%.

No - Retirement plan enrollment should always be the choice of the employee, never a forced enrollment. For example I do not enro...
