How will the FDA's newly-finalized rule impact abortion access?

Source: Kaiser Family Foundation

  1. Summary
On Wednesday the Food and Drug Administration finalized a rule expanding access to mifepristone, one of the two drugs used for medication abortions. The rule will allow pharmacies to dispense the drug after they acquire a certain license to do so. Previously only a few authorized clinics and mail-order pharmacies could distribute the drug. CVS and Walgreens are looking into acquiring the license.

The FDA also removed a rule that required patients to pick up the drug in person, making it easier for patients to receive them via mail. A doctor's prescription will still be needed for those seeking the medication.

The rule will not have much of an impact in many states that ban abortions. Some states have restrictions on mail orders of mifepristone, and some states are still considering the legality of mifepristone. Missouri is considering making it a felony to bring abortion pills into the state. However, the ability to pick up the pill at a retail pharmacy may make things easier for those traveling out of state for abortions.

Should the federal government pay people to relocate from cities to rural areas?

318 votes, 41 comments

Context: Japan offers payments to families that move out of Tokyo to smaller towns.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Shuffling people around doesn't solve the problem of lowered "fertility rates" presented in the context. [...] Looking at rural communities there are incentives for children born there not to stay there, primarily this can be traced to the societal metric of success which cannot be met in rural areas. [...] Either expand the metric of success to include things that are achievable in rural areas. Or perhaps (and it pains me to say this as I am a huge fan) "success" should not be the primary goal in life. [...] Moving people around will just slightly stay rural decay.
