What caused a major technology outage at the Federal Aviation Administration?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
The FAA's Notice to Air Missions System, which provides airborne pilots with up-to-date safety and flight information, suffered an outage late Tuesday, which led to the delay of more than 7,000 flights and the cancellation of over 1,000 more. The outage was blamed on a corrupt file in the primary and backup NOTAM program. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of a cyberattack, but consider it unlikely.

Normal air traffic resumed later that morning, but huge backlogs of travelers considerably slowed operations. President Biden ordered an investigation into the system failure following a briefing by Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, as has Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), chair of the Commerce Committee that oversees the FAA and its systems.

NOTAM has been criticized in the past for being outdated and technologically fragile. It provides large amounts of data to pilots, much of which is non-essential, written in heavily coded language, and difficult to read at points, and has led to near-accidents on runways in the past.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The rarely spoken truth is the less fuels we burn the more electricity is necessary to replace them. I find it remarkable how the available capacity of our electrical grid is hardly discussed in regard to these sort of draconian ideas. [...] I'm a huge fan of saving the planet, but it must be done with some semblance of practicality in all ways political, scientific and economic.
