How do the Biden administration and House Republicans disagree on the debt ceiling?

Source: Reuters

  1. Summary
On Thursday the U.S. hit its debt limit of $31.4 trillion. The limit is a ceiling imposed by Congress that bars the U.S. from borrowing past a certain threshold. The Treasury Department has begun "extraordinary measures" that will keep the government funded until June and give Congress time to make a deal. The Treasury says that if it runs out of measures, the U.S. will default, which would have severe economic consequences.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who won the speakership after promising to curb the deficit, says he would not support increasing the debt limit without reducing spending to 2022 levels, which requires cutting $200 billion from the federal budget. House Republicans have already pledged to not cut the defense budget or entitlement spending. Non-defense discretionary spending was $772.5 billion in the 2023 fiscal year.

The White House rejects House Republicans' proposal and Democrats cite debt ceiling increases made during the Trump administration, which were not paired with spending cuts.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - If you aren’t up to the job someone who is should do it. Burnout can lead to poor decision making, ignoring problems and isolation. I wish more office holders had the insight to know when to quit instead of thinking they’re without weakness or fault.
