Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
The suspected gunman of a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California was found dead in a white van after officers surrounded the vehicle. The suspect, a 72-year-old Asian man, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police found a handgun in the van, which had stolen license plates. Police have said they do not yet have a motive for the shooting.

The shooting occurred in a dance studio at Monterey Park on the eve of Lunar New Year, near where tens of thousands of people were gathering to celebrate a Lunar New Year festival, and resulted in 10 deaths and 10 injuries.

About 20 minutes after that shooting, the suspect walked into a different dance studio in the nearby city of Alhambra "probably with the intent to kill two more people," according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. However, two people in the building disarmed him and he fled. The gun seized by the Alhambra residents was a semiautomatic pistol with an extended magazine attached, which is illegal to possess in California.

Should defense spending be exempt from cuts if the federal budget is reduced?

498 votes, 63 comments

Context: House Republicans demand federal budget be reduced to 2022 levels, but promise not to cut defense or entitlement spending.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - We outspend the next several largest militaries combined. We have the most advanced military on the planet and enough nuclear weapons to kill every man, woman, and child several times over. We shouldn’t continue spending this absurd amount on defense when we’re considering budget cuts from things we actually need, like infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Yes - The prime purpose of the American government is to provide Americans with national security. In my view, this is nonnegotiable ...

Unsure - I can respect both sides of the argument on this. I think defense of our nation is critical, but...
