  1. Summary
In a letter to the National Archives dated Jan. 18, representatives for Mike Pence said that a small number of classified documents were "inadvertently boxed and transported" to the former vice president's personal home as the Trump administration came to a close. The letter says that Pence discovered the files on Jan. 16 when he retained outside counsel to review records in his house "out of an abundance of caution."

Pence's representatives added that they could not describe the nature of the documents because they were immediately stored in a locked safe after signs of their classified status were seen. Like President Biden's attorneys, they claim to have immediately contacted and cooperated with relevant officials upon discovering the documents.

GOP Rep. James Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, said "[Pence's] transparency stands in stark contrast to Biden White House staff." Pence had previously said on Jan. 11 that he reviewed all documents in his possession to ensure nothing classified remained with him.

Is it generally a bad thing if high-ranking officials are wealthy from private sector work?

395 votes, 52 comments

Context: President Biden's next chief of staff likely to be someone who helped lead healthcare companies accused of fraud.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The skills required to effectively lead the US government and interact with other international governments are highly valuable. It should not be surprising or a “bad thing” if individuals have applied and enveloped these skills in the private sector, and been paid well to do so. The primary issue I see arises with conflicts of interest, which is why rank-and-file federal employees with authority over funding decisions submit financial disclosure statements. [...] It’s also my understanding that high-level federal officials, including the president and staff, are supposed to have their financial interests audited to avoid conflicts of interest.
