Why will Meta allow former President Trump to return to its platforms?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
Meta will permit former President Trump to use Facebook and Instagram again in the coming weeks, concluding a two-year ban that began after the Jan. 6 capitol riot. Meta President for Global Affairs Nick Clegg said that Trump will be subject to "new guardrails" to prevent repeat offenses, and that if Trump violates content policy further, the content will be removed and Trump could face more suspensions.

“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying [...] so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box,” Clegg said. He also said that one factor in the decision was the generally smooth conduct of the midterm elections in 2022.

It is unclear if Trump will return to Facebook (or Twitter, where he was recently reinstated). But Meta's decision comes after Trump's campaign sent a letter to the company requesting his accounts be unlocked. Trump has 5 million followers on Truth Social, but 34 million on Facebook. Trump's exclusivity agreement with Truth Social is set to expire in June.

Are recent discoveries of classified docs in officials' private residences concerning?

Context: Classified documents found in the home of former Vice President Pence.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - There is obviously a problem with how classified documents are handled at high levels of government. I've had two jobs where I worked with classified documents and there's no way I could "accidentally" take them home with me without immediately being fired. The chain of custody is severely weak, how can these docs be outside of the proper chain of custody for years without being noticed?
