Which sites are impacted by new federal environmental actions?

Source: Representative Betty McCollum

  1. Summary
On Thursday the Interior Department issued a 20-year moratorium on mining near the Boundary Waters area of northeastern Minnesota, which was being considered as the site of a copper and nickel mine. The 20-year moratorium is the maximum that the Interior Department can issue; a permanent one would require an act of Congress. It reverses the Trump administration's approval of the area for leasing.

The restriction comes after two federal agencies assessed the potential environmental impacts of the proposed mine. The industry and a local Republican congressman argued that the move will increase U.S. dependence on China and slow America's clean energy transition.

The administration also repealed the Trump administration's policy on the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, which re-implements restrictions on logging and road development. Tongass is the world's largest intact temperate rainforest and acts as a carbon sink. Alaska's Republican governor said the policy would cost jobs and access to renewable energy.

Should the U.S. offer a public health insurance option?

Context: Enrollments under Obamacare hit record high amid increased subsidies and outreach; uninsured rate falls.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Especially in a post-Covid world, the federal government should be providing a national health program. Increasingly businesses are not offering health plans, and health insurance is part of why people do not leave jobs they would like to leave. We are the only major country in the world that does not provide national health programs of some sort. The lack of a national health program is particularly a problem for rural and conservative areas where there is an underinvestment in health.
