Why was the race for chair of the RNC unusually contentious?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
The race to be chair of the Republican National Committee was won decisively on Friday by Ronna McDaniel. Having already served three consecutive terms, McDaniel will be the longest-serving RNC chair in modern history. Although McDaniel won with 111 votes out of 168 RNC members, it was the most contentious RNC chair race in two decades.

McDaniel's rivals, Harmeet Dhillon and Mike Lindell, argued that new party leadership was necessary following the GOP's underwhelming performance in the 2022 midterm elections. Both are staunch supporters of former President Trump, though McDaniel herself was first nominated to her position by Trump in 2016. McDaniel has been criticized by both pro- and anti-Trump circles in her party. Trump remained neutral in this race.

In comments after the race Dhillon, who won 51 votes and received an endorsement from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, warned the party risks losing touch with voters. After winning, McDaniel pledged party unity and thanked Dhillon and Lindell.

Context: President Biden announced new actions aimed at protecting renters.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - It is out of control. Renters need to buy goods, too. For young people it is nearly impossible to pay these insane rental prices and save to buy a house or start families.

No - A mortgage is a loan, which the borrower must pay back. It may be a better deal than a private mortgage, but that better deal is often what it...
