Why has the SEC initiated several cryptocurrency-related actions recently?

  1. Summary
In recent days the US government has launched actions targeting the cryptocurrency industry. Securities and Exchange Commission head Gary Gensler has said cryptocurrencies are primarily used like securities (e.g., stocks), and should therefore be regulated as such. In the wake of crypto firm FTX's collapse last year, some lawmakers have reportedly become more amenable to Gensler's approach.

Last week the SEC reached a settlement with Kraken, a major crypto exchange. Because of the settlement, Kraken will no longer offer 'staking' as a service, which allows investors to earn interest on their crypto savings.

The agency also warned Paxos, which produces 'stablecoins' tied to the U.S. dollar, it risked being sued over securities violations. A few days ago the SEC sued Terraform Labs, which developed two popular coins whose collapse last year triggered a broader crypto market meltdown. And last Friday the agency reached a $1.4 million settlement with a former NBA star, saying the latter marketed crypto improperly.

Should employers offer paid menstrual leave?

432 votes, 59 comments

Context: Spain passes law guaranteeing right to paid menstrual leave for very severe periods.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Having separate types of work leave, that men (and trans women if available) don’t get to use seems discriminatory. If smokers get a “smoke break”, non-smokers get breaks too. This just causes less productivity and more aggravation between employees. If you just increase PTO for all you could avoid the problem altogether.
