Why did the TSA find a record-high number of guns in US airports?

Source: Transportation Security Administration

  1. Summary
The Transportation Security Administration says it recovered a record-setting 6,542 guns at airport checkpoints in 2022. Experts do not believe it reflects an increase in attempts to hijack planes, as most of those caught claim to have forgotten they carried a gun. “What we see in our checkpoints really reflects what we’re seeing in society, and in society there are more people carrying firearms nowadays,” the TSA's administrator said.

Consequences for bringing a gun vary by jurisdiction. In some places travelers are arrested, in others they are allowed to fly as long as they give their gun to a companion (who is not flying). They also face federal fines: the TSA's maximum fine is $14,950.

Aidan Johnston, who works for a gun advocacy group, told the Associated Press that fines should be reduced as they are not an effective deterrent and the crimes are largely mistakes. Airports in Atlanta, GA, and Miami, FL, saw high numbers of gun interceptions overall, but reduced the number sharply by greatly increasing signage as a reminder to gun owners.

They behave nothing like currencies and have purveyors pushing ‘explanations’ on YouTube that are reminiscent of any pump and dump sort of promotions. They act like investments, highly volatile ones, and should be regulated as such.
