What has been the emergency response to tornadoes in the US South?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
At least two dozen people are dead and 2,000 homes have been destroyed in rural Mississippi following a storm and deadly tornadoes. The communities of Rolling Fork and Silver City were the worst-hit of several small towns in the tornado's path. About 100 buildings were also damaged in Georgia. The tornado that struck Rolling Fork was an EF-4 tornado with gusts of 170mph, which is very rare.

Rolling Fork Mayor Eldridge Walker said the tornado hit so quickly that the sheriff's department barely had time to set off emergency sirens. Because Rolling Fork has a population of just 2,000, the tornado's destruction has an outsized impact. Sharkey County, which Rolling Fork is a part of, is already one of the poorest counties in the US.

The Biden administration declared an emergency, opening up federal funds for local recovery efforts. The funds will include temporary housing, home repairs, loans to cover uninsured property losses, and more. The Associated Press reports that local volunteers are helping as well.

Should the FTC require companies to make it easier to cancel subscriptions?

610 votes, 73 comments

Context: FTC rule would require companies to make cancelling a subscription as easy as signing up for one.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I sometimes find cancelling subscriptions, or even trial subscriptions to be almost impossible. I have felt like I have to cancel a credit card just to end payment. There are hidden pathways, misleading steps, and often obscure multi-step processes designed to trap consumers into subscription services they do not desire. I often do not investigate things I am actually interested in for fear of not being able to extract myself if I decide I’m no longer interested. This requirement would be very welcome.
