Why is a senator blocking the confirmation of military promotions?
Please click Display images in your email app to view this email properly

Source: Congressional Research Service

  1. Summary
For the last month, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has blocked the routine promotions of about 160 military officers in protest of the Defense Department's abortion policy for pregnant servicemembers. The US military currently covers travel expenses for personnel who cross state lines to seek legal abortions.

Tuberville argues that taxpayer funds are being used for abortions without input from voters or Congress. "I'm not going to let our military be politicized. [...] But I also want the administration to follow the law. As long as I have a voice in this body, Congress will write the laws. Not the secretary of defense," Tuberville said. Senate Democrats can override Tuberville's blocks, but it would require a time-consuming procedure.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin urged Tuberville to change his position on Tuesday. Austin noted one in five troops are women and they do not get to choose where they are stationed. He also asserted that the policy has strong legal backing, saying "It is not a law. It is a policy."

Yes - I refuse to believe that the government doesn't have enough tools to spy on people without also buying hacking tools made by companies for profit. Hacking and spying should not even exist as a market to begin with.
