Write of Passage Weekly - Making the Career Leap

This is the story of my friend, Nick Maggiulli.

He was stuck in a job he didn't like, doing work he barely cared about with people who didn't inspire him. He was working at a Boston-based litigation consulting firm. And one day, after one too many meetings, he’d had enough.

Hungry to accelerate his career, Nick made a New Year’s resolution. He committed to publishing one data-backed article every week. No exceptions.

At the time, he didn’t like writing. But he loved ideas and wanted to build his Personal Monopoly around data and investing.

When he started writing, Nick kept his posts anonymous under the pen name Of Dollars and Data because he didn't want to be judged by friends. For the first four months, nobody read his work. He felt like he was screaming into the wind, and he effectively was. Unfazed, Nick kept publishing, and his 16th article, “Just Keep Buying,” went viral.

Nick didn't know it then, but his best opportunities were still ahead of him. In January of 2018, an investment firm called Ritholtz Wealth Management, which now manages more than $1 billion in assets, asked him to fly out for an interview.

It was his dream job, in his dream city. Two weeks later, Nick received a job offer. Now, he's the company's Chief Operating Officer.

Nick’s story illustrates the upside of writing online. After 16 weeks of writing consistently, he landed his dream job. That sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

For more than a year, Nick wrote with head-down consistency. He trusted the process. Week after week, he wrote something worth reading. Some articles got attention. Most didn’t. But Nick stuck to the plan, and with each post, he built his reputation as an interesting, data-savvy expert. His curiosity turned into expertise, his expertise into credibility, and his credibility landed him a coveted job in the financial capital of the world.

• ​Salman Ansari is a senior software engineer who writes about creativity and self-awareness. His most popular post, “The Polymath's Playbook,” went viral and was shared by Tobi Lutke, the CEO of Shopify.
