How are congressional Democrats responding to new reports on Justice Clarence Thomas?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
Scrutiny of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has grown since ProPublica reported on April 6 that he had accepted gifts and vacations paid for by billionaire GOP megadonor Harlan Crow for 20 years, without disclosing the gifts. ProPublica last week also reported that Thomas sold his childhood home to Crow in 2014 without disclosing the $133,363 sale.

The Supreme Court polices itself and the justices are exempt from a code of conduct for federal judges. Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee urged Chief Justice Roberts to investigate Thomas, and said they would consider legislation if the Court could not resolve the issue.

Legal experts say Congress can create ethics guidelines for the justices, but creating enforceable rules would be difficult and enter new legal territory. Josh Blackman, a professor at South Texas College of Law, said calls for Thomas to testify before Congress could set a dangerous precedent. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2006 said a Senate proposal to create a judicial inspector general's office was "a really scary idea."

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - We need to fix our immigration system and not continue to create programs that continue to incent people to come here illegally. I have dear friends, highly qualified great people, who love America and want to be citizens, to whom I have paid thousands of dollars to help them follow the legal process. It's been eight years, and the backlog for "legal immigration" is immovable, and yet we spend billions of dollars to escort illegal people across the border, give them transportation, free cell phones, food, housing and free healthcare?

Yes - There are 580,000 DACA recipients and 330 million Americans. That's 0.17% of the US population. Literally a rounding error, and it's not like they even chose to cross illegally....

Unsure - If they are legally employed and paying into the system, I don't have any issue with them getti...
