Where did the ampersand get its name? (article)

The & symbol used to be a letter of the English alphabet(??????)

Genuine question: would people in the 1800s say there were 27 letters in the alphabet?

Semi-related: one of the easiest things to do to make your copy easier to read is changing every single “and” to “&”. The symbol breaks up the text & makes the reading flow much more smoothly w/o as much of a mental tax.

I feel even more justified in doing so having found out that the ampersand used to be a letter of the alphabet…
