Why did the Senate not remove the expired deadline for a Constitutional amendment?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
The Senate failed to pass a resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Many saw the vote as symbolic. The proposed constitutional amendment reads: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."

The ERA was first introduced to Congress in 1923, but it was not adopted until 1972. Ratification from at least 38 states is needed to add an amendment to the Constitution, but the ERA failed to get enough states' support within a 1982 deadline set by Congress. Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the amendment in 2020. The resolution debated on Thursday would have removed the expired deadline.

51 Senators voted in favor of the resolution, falling short of the required 60 votes. Democrats tied the measure to court rulings restricting abortion. Most Republicans opposed it. Conservative critics say it is an attempt to create a Constitutional right to abortion, and also argue various federal laws passed in the last few decades protect women's rights.

Should states ban assault weapons?

578 votes, 99 comments

Context: Washington state passes ban on assault weapons.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Guns and cars should be treated the same. The more responsibility associated with the gun/car the more training required for it. I would also like to see some level of weapons reach a military grade and become unavailable to the public. The cutoff for me would be related to a metric of how much danger the weapon could cause in a short amount of time. Bombs aren't legal for the public to have because they represent a huge danger to the public. But a small bomb and an AR-15 aren't too different in the amount of people that can be killed in a near instant.

No - The term "assault weapon" itself is beyond vague. Because a gun looks a certain way it needs to be banned? More people are beaten to death with hands and feet each year than die by rifle (in 2021 461 people were killed by...

Unsure - I really don't see why people might need something like an AR-15. But there is so much misrep...
