What is known about the massacre that took place in Cleveland, Texas?

Source: Office of Justice Programs

  1. Summary
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott partially walked back his news release about the victims of a shooting in Cleveland, Texas. Authorities say 38-year-old Francisco Oropesa killed five of his neighbors, all part of a family, after one of them asked him to stop shooting targets in his backyard. Abbott's statement said the shooter "is in the country illegally and killed five illegal immigrants."

Abbott's release was criticized for focusing on the victims' immigration status. Abbott's office has since acknowledged that at least one victim may have been in the US legally, and the status of the others is uncertain.

Fox News and CNN, each citing sources with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reported that Oropesa had been deported from the US at least four times. Fox News reported he was in the country illegally, while CNN said his legal status is unclear. It also remains unclear how Oropesa acquired his AR-15-style rifle. The manhunt for him has continued into its fourth day with no apparent leads.
