Why are active-duty troops being deployed to the southern border?
Please click Display images in your email app to view this email properly

Source: Customs and Border Protection

  1. Summary
The Biden administration is deploying 1,500 active duty troops to the southern border in advance of an expected spike in illegal crossings. The Trump-era Title 42 order, which allowed expedited asylum rejections, will expire on May 11, which officials believe will incentivize crossings.

The troops will not handle law enforcement, and instead will focus on "duties such as ground based detection and monitoring, data entry, and warehouse support," to "free up" border patrol agents. They will join about 2,500 already-deployed National Guardsmen and stay 90 days. Texas has also deployed about 4,500 Texas National Guard members, a small portion of whom handle law enforcement.

Democratic Sen. Jon Tester said the deployment underscores a lack of funding for the Department of Homeland Security, while Republican Sen. Roger Wicker said the administration limits border agents trying to enforce the law. Former presidents Trump, Obama, and Bush have all deployed troops to the border. A 2006 deployment entailed law enforcement.

Should police departments encourage people to put AirTags in their vehicles?

251 votes, 35 comments

Context: NYC gives away 500 AirTags; encourages use of them in cars to help police stop auto theft.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Yes, and I agree with the use of the word "encouraged." It shouldn't be a mandate or a regulation. As long as you don't mind having the police know where you are, I think having the option to put a tracking device in your car is a good idea. If I lived in a city I would consider it.

Unsure - It all depends on if they will actively monitor AirTags, or only do so if a vehic...
