Why were several 'Proud Boys' found guilty of seditious conspiracy?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
A jury in Washington, DC, found four members of the Proud Boys, a far-right group, guilty of seditious conspiracy for their actions on Jan. 6, 2021. A fifth defendant was cleared of the sedition charge, but he was convicted of several other felonies. It comes months after federal prosecutors won seditious conspiracy convictions for members of the Oath Keepers, another far-right group.

Defense lawyers argued there was no concerted plot to attack the Capitol, but prosecutors were aided by hundreds of messages between Proud Boys members in the run-up to the riot. Among the convicted is former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was not present at the riot but encouraged the other members to act from afar.

Seditious conspiracy is a rarely used charge that carries up to 20 years in prison. In 2020, then-Attorney General Bill Barr tried to use the charges against left-wing rioters, which law professors at UCLA and George Washington University criticized as a dangerous precedent.

Is the availability of guns the main factor in mass shootings?

525 votes, 85 comments

Context: School shooting in Serbia, a country with a high rate of gun ownership but strict gun control.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I mean, is the availability of cars the main reason for car accidents? In every shooting I can recall, the shooter was familiar with guns. They had been exposed to them, been shooting for years, had their own, etc. It's really hard to shoot someone if you don't have a gun, it's almost as hard if you don't know where to get one, and it's still a factor if you don't know how to use one. Availability builds familiarity, which influences use.

No - Guns have been available for a long time, yet mass shootings seem to be something of a more recent vintage. Something else is going on...

Unsure - I think availability of guns is definitely a big factor, and that some common sense gun control is needed. But,...
