Which states in the South recently changed their abortion laws?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
On Tuesday the South Carolina Senate approved a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The governor is expected to sign it. The measure makes exceptions for rape or incest, life-threatening situations, and fatal fetal anomalies. Most women do not know they are pregnant at six weeks.

South Carolina Republicans said the state was increasingly becoming a haven for legal abortions as neighboring states restricted the procedure. The Senate's three female Republicans opposed the six-week ban, urging their colleagues to pass a 12-week ban instead. The bill's passage comes after the House failed to pass a bill banning abortion almost entirely.

South Carolina's ban comes one week after North Carolina's legislature overrode Gov. Roy Cooper's veto to put a 12-week abortion ban into effect. The North Carolina law makes exceptions for rape or incest and provides $75 million to expand childcare subsidies. Similarly, after Florida's legislature approved a six-week abortion ban in April, it passed a bill expanding eligibility for children to get low-cost health insurance.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I expect that somewhere along the way the media will start listening to some of the other candidates and give them airtime, that the pursuit of President Trump on legal matters will continue to take its toll and the right-leaning Independents will look for someone strong in policies that support the middle class, that can speak strongly without the bombast. The Independent voter is key. But hey, just my opinion.
