  1. Summary
Philadelphia's Democrats went to the polls Tuesday to pick their nominee for the mayoral race, selecting former City Council member Cherelle Parker. As Philadelphia is heavily Democratic, Parker is likely to become the next mayor. The race was the most expensive in the city's history.

Polling had indicated a close race between five Democrats. Helen Gym was the progressive, backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Rebecca Rhynhart had endorsements from more moderate Democrats, while Parker had many local officials' endorsements. With 77% of precincts reporting, Parker won the race with 33% of the vote. Rhynhart and Gym were next with 22% and 21% respectively.

In Kentucky, Republicans voted to select Daniel Cameron, the state's attorney general, as their gubernatorial candidate. Daniel Cameron is backed by former President Trump, while one of his rivals was backed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Cameron won with a large lead. He will go on to face Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear next year.

Should states withhold public funds from DEI programs at public universities?

545 votes, 55 comments

Context: Florida to withhold funds for DEI programs, and require universities review certain types of lessons.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I work at a predominately white university in the midwest and collaborate with our DEI office often. I don't think people realize how diverse universities are - we have students/staff/faculty from over 100 different countries in a relevant small space, doing very complex things. The DEI office plays a valuable role in making diverse students/staff/faculty feel welcome and educating everyone on how to live/work in such a diverse environment. You can argue how [DEI] should be addressed at public institutions (I take issue with some of the current approaches), but completely defunding these programs will hurt the institutions and the experiences of the people attending/working at them.

Yes - Student populations in our universities are more diverse than the population as a whole. The least diverse department is the DNI office. In one colle...
