How have officials in Davenport, Iowa responded to a partial building collapse?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
The official response of Davenport, Iowa, to a building collapse has led to local controversy. Part of the six-story apartment building collapsed on Sunday evening, for reasons that are not yet known. The rest of the structure's integrity is rapidly degrading. It was built in 1907.

On Monday officials called off the rescue operation, saying there were no indications of anyone left alive, and prepared to demolish the building. Hours before the demolition, a ninth person was rescued from an upper floor. The demolition was postponed. On Tuesday police revised their assessment, saying five people remained unaccounted for.

Hundreds protested near the building on Tuesday morning, urging another search. Some included family members of two people believed to be inside the building. Later that day, city officials conducted another sweep of parts of the building that presented "an acceptable risk," retrieving no one. Fire Marshal Jim Morris, his voice breaking at a news conference, said rescuers cannot go into the debris without destabilizing the whole building.

Are US politicians too supportive of a military solution to the Ukraine war?

408 votes, 45 comments

Context: Sen. Lindsey Graham lauds US military aid to Ukraine.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Russia interprets the world relative to its own power and its ability to project it beyond its borders based on its deep-seated nationalism. Putin is not interested in a diplomatic solution because it would destroy his legacy and honor. And, Ukraine is not interested in a diplomatic solution that results in losing land. Ukraine understands Russia will be emboldened if they walk away from this with even a small sliver of land won. In other words, Russia will likely try again. The world has the opportunity to put Russia in its place and put China on notice.

Yes - Just as with all of our recent failed military interventions, US politicians shoot first and will regret it later when it becomes popular to do so. Limited ...

Unsure - We see this over and over — it’s arguably immoral to stand back and watch Russia ...
