  1. Summary
In a 6-3 ruling issued on Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected the "independent state legislature" doctrine supported by North Carolina state lawmakers. The Republican legislators argued that the US Constitution does not allow state courts to limit state legislatures' authority to regulate federal elections. The case was brought after the North Carolina Supreme Court struck down congressional maps drawn by the state's legislature.

Some observers worried a ruling in favor of the untested legal theory would upend elections. The majority opinion said that while state legislatures can set federal election rules, they remain subject to "the ordinary exercise of state judicial review." Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the dissent, said the majority opinion would cause confusion and that the case was moot (as the North Carolina Supreme Court later reversed its ruling).

The majority noted that state courts do not have unlimited power to review election rules, but declined to address the exact limit, leading some legal experts to say that the legal battle will resurface for upcoming elections.

Are corporate ESG policies a good thing overall?

Context: BlackRock CEO, prominent ESG advocate, says term has become too politicized.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Take it from a former executive leader, companies like Black Rock are basically blackmailing corporations to prioritize ESG. It would be one thing if this influence drove short-term and long-term improvements in business strength and profitability. But the reality is companies can't afford to invest in things that do not have an appropriate ROI, so it forces marketing and promotion - which basically means companies are forced to consider politically divisive topics to "promote" as a way of "checking the ESG box."

Yes - ESG is a loaded term, but at its essence each letter stands for sustainable, responsible and people-focused. These are the hallmarks of sound corporate and long-term investing strategy. Board...

Unsure - This is really simple. If a company’s ESG (or any) po...
