What is known so far about a shooting at a Baltimore party?

  1. Summary
Two people were killed and 28 were wounded at a party in Baltimore over the weekend. South Baltimore's Brooklyn neighborhood was celebrating an annual public festival when gunfire erupted at around 12:35 am. The incident is likely the biggest mass shooting in Baltimore's history, and comes as the city continues to struggle with high homicide rates.

Three of the 28 injured are in critical condition. Three quarters of the victims are teenagers and over half are female. Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at least two shooters were involved, and that it remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or indiscriminate. Some neighborhood residents interviewed by the Baltimore Sun expressed concern the incident would lead to local revenge shootings.

Two residents told the Baltimore Sun that local police were not present at the event, unlike in past years, and a local police union leader suggested the police patrol at the time of the shooting was short-staffed. In a news conference on Monday, Worley denied police staffing was an issue.

Should President Biden try mass student loan forgiveness again?

Context: Biden administration announces another plan to cancel student debt after Supreme Court ruling.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I worked to pay for the last three years of my college expenses at an in-state school and finished with a BA. Taking the path of huge loans to attend more expensive schools should include in the loan application, a business plan for how the loan will be repaid. Rewarding those who elect to incur the loan by wiping out that debt simply because it seems “a nice thing to do” places the burden on those of us who chose a more prudent path by using our hard-earned tax dollars to essentially write down the loans and give them the equivalent of a lower cost school while [they walk] away with a Harvard or Yale level degree.
