What is the scope of a ruling on federal contact with social media companies?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
District Judge Terry Doughty on Tuesday issued an injunction limiting the Biden administration's ability to work with social media companies. The ruling favors a challenge by Missouri and Louisiana, which say the federal government pressured social media companies into removing dissenting views about Covid-19, election security, and Hunter Biden's laptop.

The plaintiffs claim that the government pressured companies via veiled threats of regulation. Other courts have rejected similar claims, finding insufficient evidence that companies acted under government direction. The Biden administration said the ruling will hinder its ability to stop foreign influence campaigns and provide accurate health information.

Lawyers involved in the case say the injunction is unprecedented. Doughty said the order is not a blanket ban on government-social media contact, just that a few agencies are prohibited from encouraging the suppression of "protected free speech." He said other agencies can still inform platforms about things like security threats or health information.

Is the recent increase in strikes generally a good thing?

302 votes, 33 comments

Context: Hotel workers in southern California strike, joining other regional labor disputes.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - It is only the overdue rebalancing of the power struggle between labor and capital. Since the end of WWII, capital gradually bought the legislation they needed to increase their power relative to labor. Then they paid to gradually undermine the remaining regulations at the federal level. At the same time, they were buying up state legislatures and getting "right to work" laws in place. This all resulted in a serious decrease in union participation. Now organized labor is making a bit of a resurgence and pushing back a bit at the power of capital. It's a good thing.
