What is the estimated impact of a new offshore wind project?

Source: Energy Information Administration

  1. Summary
The Biden administration has approved Ocean Wind 1 offshore of New Jersey, which will be the biggest offshore wind project in the U.S. It will have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts, enough to power 380,000 homes. It is expected to produce 3,000 jobs. Offshore wind is broadly popular in New Jersey, but Ocean Wind 1 has met local opposition.

Ocean Wind 1 will be managed by Danish company Ørstedt, which plans to spend $695 million and build up to 98 wind turbines. New Jersey's legislature narrowly approved subsidies for the project. Republican New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith criticized the approval, saying it has environmental issues, "national security implications," and relies on taxpayer money. Smith estimates Ørstedt could ultimately receive up to $1 billion in subsidies.

Ocean Wind 1 is the third commercial-scale offshore wind project approved by the Biden administration, and a major stepping stone in the administration's larger goal of having offshore wind produce 30 gigawatts of energy by 2030, enough to power 10 million homes.
