Why is the Federal Reserve expected to raise interest rates again?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
209,000 jobs were added to the US economy in June, the smallest monthly gain in 2.5 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite the cooling jobs gains, the unemployment rate dropped from 3.7% to 3.6%, close to a fifty-year low.

The figures imply that the Federal Reserve has not slowed the economy as much as it intended, as part of its fight against inflation. The June figures make it very likely that the Fed will resume raising interest rates, following a brief pause. Much of the job gains were in the public sector, which tends to be insulated from larger economic conditions, so the central bank may not view the economy as overheating.

Some expect an economic slowdown later this year, as student loan payments resume and higher interest rates take effect. Labor shortages are easing: the labor force participation rate (the proportion of people working or seeking work) remains below pre-pandemic levels overall, but the participation rate for those aged 25 to 54 is at its highest since 2002.

Should employers' use of AI in hiring decisions be regulated?

318 votes, 28 comments

Context: New York City passes first-in-nation law regulating employers' use of AI in hiring, promotions.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Hiring is already regulated, for good reason. This is not new. So yes, those regulations should certainly extend to AI, to ensure that the same theoretically-equal opportunities are given.

No - If AI leads to poor decisions for hiring managers they will fix it. I know the concern is various sorts of discrimination, but that exists...
