  1. Summary
The Northeastern US was inundated with rain on Sunday night, leaving at least one person dead and prompting emergency declarations in New York and Vermont. The storm began in New York state and has caused tens of millions in damage. 400 flights into or out of the East Coast were canceled Monday, after 50% of flights out of New York’s LaGuardia Airport were canceled Sunday.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul described the resulting floods as a 1,000-year event. Vermont Gov. Phil Scott said the storm's rainfall is expected to be comparable to that of Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. Officials in Ulster County, NY, also said the flooding was comparable to Irene, which at the time was the worst weather event in the county's history.

Meanwhile, flooding was also reported in India and Japan, and 38 million Americans are under heat advisories. Both local and global heat records were broken in recent days. Experts say the events are broadly connected because of human-caused climate change and the El Nino weather pattern.

Should the United States send Ukraine cluster munitions?

350 votes, 37 comments

Context: US to send cluster bombs, some suggest US cluster bombs' failure rate is higher than official estimates.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - It is very telling that NATO sees a need to supply Ukraine with fighter jets, cluster munitions, and potentially long-range missiles after long refusing to grant them. It means they are worried about Ukraine's odds. But simply giving Ukraine advanced weapons isn't enough to change the structural nature of the conflict: Russia still has a huge arsenal, much more manpower, and NATO is running low on its own ammo. "Russia uses cluster munitions" is not an argument. Ukraine is justifiably desperate but you don't get to start harming civilians just because the other side is doing it.

Yes - Ukraine is in an existential fight against a cruel and ruthless enemy. Russia is already using cluste...

Unsure - Balancing humanitarian concerns seems tough. I don't think...
