Why did a state appeals court rule New York must draw a new congressional map?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
A mid-level New York appellate court on Thursday ruled the state's independent redistricting commission must begin drawing up a new congressional map. The ruling is a win for ten New York voters who sued over the state's 2022 lines, which saw Republicans flip four congressional seats. State Republicans say redistricting again, mid-decade, is inappropriate and that the 2022 lines should remain in place.

The 2022 map had been drawn by a court-appointed expert. The redistricting commission, made of equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, failed to reach a consensus for the 2022 maps, leading to the Democrat-controlled legislature drawing maps that were rejected in court.

Some expect the redistricting commission's 2024 maps to end up before the state legislature again, potentially benefitting Democrats. New York Republicans note the state has many competitive districts and will challenge Thursday's ruling. Democrats lost control of the House by five seats in 2022, and consider regaining seats in New York a priority.

Would deregulating home insurance help disaster-prone states?

264 votes, 26 comments

Context: Insurers pull back home, auto policies in Florida and California.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Insurance premiums would skyrocket for the average homeowner in a deregulated market. The core issue is that the property insurance model is broken. [...] Fundamental change will be necessary; including the prohibition of new construction in coastal and low-lying areas, high-risk fire districts, etc. And, of course, the cost of new construction will push a growing number of people out of home ownership altogether. These changes will take time. The government should redirect public assistance away from disaster relief and toward relocation assistance for existing property owners.

Unsure - More than deregulation is needed. Laws regarding Fl...
