Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
A new report from the Associated Press published on Tuesday reveals that Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s staff pushed colleges and libraries to purchase the justice's books when she traveled for speaking engagements. The news agency describes Sotomayor as a prolific author that maintains the court's most active travel schedule. The Supreme Court has few set rules governing the conduct of taxpayer-funded staff.

On one occasion, Michigan State University reportedly spent $100,000 buying Sotomayor's books for incoming first-year students. The university said the AP omitted that the purchase was part of a larger city initiative.

"Schools have occasionally invited [Sotomayor] to take part in a program in which they select a book for an entire [school or class], and the Justice gives a book talk," the Supreme Court responded, adding that for such events, staff recommend a book quantity "so as not to disappoint attendees." Sotomayor has received hundreds of thousands in royalties from publisher Penguin Random House over the years.

Should schools ban certain energy drinks?

297 votes, 29 comments

Context: Senator urges investigation into 'Prime' energy drinks, which are banned in some British and Australian schools.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Ideally energy drinks become illegal for children under a certain age. Their brains are not ready for the change that caffeine brings, especially when combined with the massive amounts of sugar that many energy drinks also contain. In the meantime, schools need to do what some parents can’t - protect their kids from ingesting things which are bad for their health.

No - Banning and giving it all this attention will only make it more desirable. Should they be sold in schools? No. Should the...

Unsure - I don't think the schools should provide these or make them more accessible, but there is not (even in Australia where the context is from) an age limit in most places for the purchase and/or co...
