Why did a routine defense bill pass the House along partisan lines?

Source: ABC News via Yahoo! News

  1. Summary
On Friday the House of Representatives narrowly passed the latest iteration of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which funds the defense budget. The $874 billion bill includes several amendments related to cultural issues pushed by the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

The 219-210 vote occurred along party lines, a break from the 60-year tradition of the bill receiving bipartisan support. The Freedom Caucus threatened to withhold support unless Speaker McCarthy allowed its cultural amendments. Democrats consider the amendments a nonstarter. The bill will likely fail in the Senate, setting the stage for a long dispute.

The cultural amendments would reverse the Pentagon's policy of covering abortion travel costs for service members; restrict gender-affirming care for transgender troops; remove diversity initiatives; and block the Pentagon from implementing President Biden's executive order to curtail emissions. Bipartisan majorities rejected amendments to withhold Ukraine military aid and ban the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine.

Should health insurers be required to cover over-the-counter birth control pills?

381 votes, 39 comments

Context: Birth control pill approved for OTC use; Biden admin may expand ACA to require insurers to cover it.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - If women can’t get abortions they need contraceptives. Just like other preventive measures these need to be paid for by health carriers. This is not rocket science, folks. It is much less expensive for insurance companies to bear the tiny cost of prevention than the long-term cost of child health care over the period of time the child is growing up. In addition, in many parts of our country, healthcare providers are stretched very, very thin. They are close to being burned out in many cases. For heaven’s sake, if someone doesn’t want to give birth, let them make that choice for themselves — and make it easy for them to do so.

No - Let insurance companies focus on the more significant issues, the big tick...
