Why is there speculation that Sen. Joe Manchin will run for president?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Speculation that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) will run for president increased Monday after the senator appeared at a New Hampshire town hall sponsored by the centrist advocacy group No Labels. At the event, Manchin said the two big parties have "gone too far right and too far left," and that the parties needed to be threatened by a third-party push that unites centrists and independents.

No Labels is seeking to get on ballots throughout the country, though its leaders say it does not intend to act as a spoiler. Many observers note the group's platform lacks specifics, such as on abortion policy.

Manchin is facing a reelection challenge from Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican with a strong polling lead. Pollster Fernand Amandi told Vox that Manchin may be flirting with a presidential bid to convince the state's conservative voters that he is not subservient to Democrats. Several Democrats in West Virginia's state legislature, interviewed by the Daily Caller, had mixed opinions about whether he would run for president.

Should student loans be forgiven after 10 years of consistent payments?

488 votes, 73 comments

Context: Biden administration proposes payment plans that forgive student loans under $12,000, after 10 years of consistent payment.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - By the government? Absolutely not. Should they be paid for or ‘forgiven’ by employers that want people with those skills - sure. The argument that randomly more educated people are good for society doesn’t hold water. Homeowners are good for society - and no one is suggesting we pay off their debt after 10 years. Consumption is good for the economy and society but no one is suggesting we pay off credit card debt.

Yes - First, they're federal loans so the federal government has every right to incur a loss on them. Second, it's not a complete loss, presumably after 10 years at least a substantial por...

Unsure - It depends on how much is left on the loan. I would rather see a set amount forgiven. As a teacher at a low-income school district, I was eligible...
