What claims have been made about Texas' treatment of migrants?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Texas' Department of Public Safety is investigating a state trooper's claim that the treatment of migrants at the border has "stepped over a line into the inhumane." The trooper, a medic, made his claims via an email to a superior officer that was reported on by the Houston Chronicle. The news comes as Texas builds a floating barrier in the Rio Grande.

The trooper claimed that when he encountered a group of 120 migrants, which included small children, his unit was ordered to push them back into the waters of the Rio Grande. He also claims to have seen a 4-year-old girl trying to cross razor wire get pressed back by the Texas Guard and pass out from the heat, though she received medical treatment; and that a 19-year-old woman had a miscarriage after being stuck in razor wire.

The trooper specifically objected to placing razor wire by water, saying it forced people to enter dangerous waters. Texas officials said there are no orders to push migrants into the water but defended the increased use of razor wire fortifications, saying it deters dangerous crossings.

YESTERDAY'S POLL

Should more states eliminate cash bail?

313 votes, 35 comments

Context: Illinois Supreme Court upholds provision in state law that bans cash bail.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - People likely to flee or to harm others will still stay in jail. For non-violent (or even innocent!) people, cash bail makes justice a thing that only rich people can afford. If you’re stuck in jail you can’t work, you can’t pay your rent, you can’t take care of your children, you can’t make car payments. You can literally lose everything. You don’t even have to be brought to trial, much less convicted of a crime, to have your life ruined [...].

No - The whole point of a bail bond is security that the suspect will appear in co...

Unsure - Bail is intended to guarantee the appearance of the accused at trial. If any other sort of system is created that in any way lessens the incentive...
