  1. Summary
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would require the Supreme Court to adopt a code of ethics. Supported by Democrats, it passed on an 11-10 party-line vote and Republicans say it is dead on arrival when it reaches the split Senate and GOP-led House of Representatives.

The bill would require the Supreme Court to impose more rigorous rules related to the disclosure of gifts, travel, and income received by the justices as well as their clerks. It also would require the court to establish a procedure that requires entities filing friend-of-the-court briefs to disclose gifts to justices, and set rules for when justices must recuse themselves.

Supreme Court justices do not have to abide by a code of conduct, unlike federal officials and judges, but Chief Justice Roberts said all justices adhere to a "Statement of Ethics Principles" and consult other experts on ethical conduct. The bill comes after ProPublica and other outlets reported on undisclosed gifts received by Justice Thomas. GOP lawmakers describe the reports as partisan attempts to delegitimize the court.

Should selective universities that receive public funds have to end legacy admissions?

350 votes, 41 comments

Context: Private universities voluntarily end legacy preferences.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Legacy admissions promotes a group of applicants who have already had the advantage of their parents' good fortune. And it is another marketing ploy to those Alumni parents to once again invest in the college, selling them pride to see their children follow in their footsteps. As nice as that may seem, it puts other applicants at a disadvantage. A private institution has the latitude to make those calls, but a public funded, even partially funded university, should set its goal to serve that public fairly and without bias.

No - I was the first in my family to complete a college education, and I relied heavily on financial aid to do so. My college has a robust endowment fund which allows generous financial aid for those who need it. The contributions of loyal alumni like myself keep that...
