How has Alabama's legislature responded to court rulings on the state's voting maps?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
Alabama's GOP-dominated legislature approved new congressional maps on Friday. A district court had ordered the state to redraw its maps, saying they violate the Voting Rights Act. Alabama currently has one majority-Black district out of seven total districts, but 25% of the state's population is Black. The Supreme Court upheld the lower court's ruling in June.

The district court ordered the state to redraw its maps to include two districts with a Black "voting-age majority or something quite close to it." The newly-approved maps, which were signed by the governor, contain one district with a narrow Black voting-age majority and one district where Black people comprise 40% of the voting-age population.

Alabama Democrats say the redrawn maps violate the courts' rulings, while Republicans say they are in compliance. The new maps are likely headed for a new round of litigation. Some Democrats also accused Republicans of trying to get the Supreme Court to revisit and weaken the Voting Rights Act, which Alabama's House speaker denied.

Should the Senate pass the Supreme Court ethics bill?

470 votes, 59 comments

Context: Senate committee narrowly approves ethics code for SCOTUS; unlikely to pass full Senate vote.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - We’ve seen over the past year (actually throughout history) what happens when a powerful group and/or powerful individuals are allowed to self-police…suddenly the rules that apply to everyone else are only for everyone else. Thomas and Alito may claim that they weren’t paid for their votes but the kind of money and gifts that they took were certainly meant to influence their votes. The Supreme Court needs to be held to a standard that everyone else is held to and with consequences if they don’t hold to that standard.

No - The Senate has more ethics violations per day than the Supreme Court has in a year. Clean up your own house first. Start by banning stock ownership for all in Congress; banning meetin...
