Why is Hunter Biden's plea deal being delayed?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Hunter Biden's plea deal with federal prosecutors appeared to be in jeopardy after a Wednesday court hearing. The plea deal would have seen Biden get probation for two misdemeanors for failing to pay $100,0000 in income tax in 2017 and 2018, and avoid a felony sentence on a separate gun ownership charge. The deal was decried as too lenient by Republicans.

District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika, who appeared frustrated at points, raised concerns about potential overlap between the plea agreements for the tax charges and gun charge. Norieka worried part of the gun-related deal would force her to determine whether or not Biden violated the deal's terms, which is outside the purview of judges. Norieka also worried a clause in the deal could grant Biden immunity from future charges.

Norieka questioned Biden for more specifics on his business dealings with Chinese and Ukrainian entities. The judge ultimately deferred her decision for 30 days and asked both the defense and prosecution to try again to convince her. Biden in the meantime pleaded not guilty to the tax charges.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - None of the accusations being made against Biden happened while Biden was actually Pres. But, it sounds good for ratings and feeds a ravaging base on right-wing media. It’s a deflection and projection attempt to help shield and spin the narrrative of the actual wrongdoings of Trump, and his multiple indictments. On a side note, it is interesting though that with all their inquiries, and hearings, Republicans like Jim Jordan continue to have difficulty finding anyone or anything to prove actual wrongdoing. Their star witnesses prove to be anything but [...] One whistleblower was an actual spy for China who didn’t show up to testify.
