  1. Summary
The first GOP presidential primary debate, which featured eight candidates but not former President Trump, was held Wednesday evening. Mike Pence and Tim Scott stated explicit support for a nationwide abortion ban, while Nikki Haley said a federal ban was politically unrealistic and Ron DeSantis said he would "stand on the side of life."

Candidates were asked whether they would support Trump as the nominee even if he gets convicted of a crime: all except but Asa Hutchinson and Chris Christie raised their hands. Four candidates said Pence did the right thing in allowing the certification of votes in January 2021; DeSantis did not answer the issue directly. Only DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy said they would not support increasing aid to Ukraine.

Separately, a pre-recorded interview of Donald Trump by Tucker Carlson was released on X at the same time as the debate. It acquired 80 million views within an hour. In it, Trump called Fox News biased in favor of DeSantis and said the border would be his top priority.

Are restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors discriminatory?

534 votes, 78 comments

Context: Conflicting court rulings on state bans on gender care for minors.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - They are being applied equally to both biologically male and female individuals of all colors and creeds. We have laws that restrict the sale of tobacco or alcohol to young people, so there is solid precedent that these laws stand on that there are certain things in which the Government and the people who elected that government agree that young people are simply not mature enough to involve themselves with. Whichever side of the debate you fall on regarding the rightness of these laws, these laws are clearly not discriminatory.

Yes - Racist laws against interracial marriage technically applied to both black and white people but we all know they were actually discriminatory. ...

Unsure - I typically disagree with outright "bans" on anything because it paints issues as absolutely black-and-white. I think significant restrictions should b...
