23 million internal links: For this study, Cyrus Shepard looked at 23 million internal links across 1,800 websites, representing approximately 520,000 individual URLs. Here are some important things he learned: 1) Pages with more incoming internal links tend to get more traffic, but this effect reverses after a URL receives about 45–50 internal links. 2) URLs with a larger number of anchor text variations from internal links are highly correlated with more Google search traffic.

Fixing “Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt”: Instead of blocking URLs via robots.txt, Eoghan Henn used an alternative approach: 1) Remove or mask all internal links pointing to the URLs, 2) set the URLs to “noindex” or redirect them permanently, and 3) make sure that the URLs are not blocked via the robots.txt file.
