What is expected of the federal antitrust trial of Google?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
The US' biggest antitrust tech trial in two decades is set to begin on Tuesday. The Department of Justice will make its case that Google's agreements with other companies violate anti-monopoly law. If the DOJ wins, a second trial will be held to determine the resolution. It is separate from a newer DOJ lawsuit focused on Google's advertising business.

The trial centers on deals in which Google pays internet browsers to make Google the default search engine, and deals in which Google requires Android phone manufacturers to preload certain Google apps. The presiding judge limited the scope of the trial to exclude arguments that Google suppresses niche search providers, such as Yelp.

Google will argue that other search providers remain competitive, citing data that 60% of US product searches begin on Amazon. Google is also expected to argue its market power has benefitted consumers. Some suggest recent advances in AI, which have come from other companies, could complicate the DOJ's case that Google is stifling innovation.

Should the right to publicly carry a firearm be limited in cities with high gun violence rates?

578 votes, 92 comments

Context: New Mexico governor suspends right to carry arms in public in localities with high violent crime rates.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen was a mistake. It bats aside the entire, qualifying first clause of the Second Amendment and makes it impossible to regulate guns for public safety. It won't stand forever, but it's wreaking death in the meantime. SCOTUS isn't infallible. This must be corrected. This present action appears to be a deliberate step to demand some clarity (and reason) from the Court. Hooray for the governor, I say.
