  1. Summary
Special counsel David Weiss indicted Hunter Biden on felony gun charges on Thursday. Hunter faces two counts related to making false statements in purchasing a firearm and a third count of illegally obtaining the firearm while addicted to drugs. The first two charges carry a sentence of 5-10 years while the possession charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

The indictment comes after a plea deal between the president's son and federal prosecutors collapsed in July, when a judge questioned the deal's structure and the scope of an immunity agreement. Hunter's attorneys claim a pretrial diversion agreement for a gun charge remains in effect, but Weiss' team disputes this. Recent court rulings have questioned the legality of laws barring those with substance abuse disorders from owning guns.

It also comes weeks after Weiss was elevated to special counsel status, which granted him the authority to file charges anywhere in the US. More charges are expected, as Weiss withdrew two misdemeanor tax charges in Delaware with the intention of refiling them in other jurisdictions.

Should the expanded Child Tax Credit be revived?

Context: Child poverty rate doubles, expiration of pandemic safety net cited as reason.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - First, the role of government spending in inflation is overstated. [...] But more to the point, it is crazy to me that we've always been an outlier among wealthy nations in terms of poverty, life expectancy, etc, and then for a brief period of a year or two we lived up to what should be expected of the wealthiest country on Earth. The safety net just helps people get on their feet and gives poor kids a fighting chance to grow out of poverty. Surely we can trim some fat from the defense budget to afford that?

No - We can't continue to hand out other people's money to everyone. Let's face it, a big reason we are in the economic mess we are in currently, is because politicians h...
