Why is Mitt Romney retiring from the Senate?

  1. Summary
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney on Wednesday announced he would not seek re-election in 2024. He said that at the end of another term, he would be in his mid-80s, and that "Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders." He said he would not leave politics completely upon leaving office.

Romney criticized both President Biden and former President Trump. "On the deficits and debt, both men refuse to address entitlements," he said. "Donald Trump calls global warming a hoax and President Biden offers feel-good solutions [...] On China, President Biden underinvests in the military and President Trump underinvests in our alliances."

Romney was one of 17 congressional Republicans who voted to impeach Trump; now six are left, including him. A poll of Utah Republicans from August found just 56% approved of Romney. Although Romney's seat will likely go to another Republican, it remains unclear whether it will be a moderate or someone farther right. Utah has a sizable contingent of Trump-skeptical Republicans.

Should the FDA have ineffective cold medicines pulled from the market?

370 votes, 42 comments

Context: FDA advisory panel finds key ingredient in nasal decongestants does not work.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - The FDA probably shouldn't approve half of the things that it does. But I do feel the context conflates the drug effectiveness with formulation effectiveness. It is possible that the drug itself is effective if properly delivered, that the drug without proper formulation is ineffective, or that some formulations are effective and some are not. In this case it is a problem where some formulations are effective and some are not. Even still ineffective formulations should be removed from the market.

No - Wrong question, is the FDA justified in removing these products? No. These products have been around long enough that mo...
