Why might the federal government shut down at the end of the month?

Source: Yahoo! Finance

  1. Summary
House GOP leaders have unveiled a short-term spending bill aimed at avoiding a government shutdown past September 30. The bill would extend the government's funding for a month, but cut non-defense and veteran discretionary spending by 8% and impose tougher border measures.

Although the bill was written by leaders of the House GOP's Main Street Caucus and the more hardline House Freedom Caucus, many far-right representatives are skeptical of the measure. GOP Rep. Chip Roy, a Freedom Caucus leader, urged his peers to accept the bill by noting that it did not have supplemental funding for Ukraine or natural disasters.

Members of the Freedom Caucus say Rep. Kevin McCarthy committed to serious spending cuts in order to win enough votes to become Speaker of the House, and expressed disappointment with the spending deal he made with President Biden in May. Even if the stopgap bill can pass the House, it is unlikely to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate because of its spending cuts and the border measures.

YESTERDAY'S POLL

Judge Tanya Chutkan should place ___ limits on Donald Trump's public speech.

509 votes, 55 comments

Context: Federal prosecutors seek partial gag order on former president; some argue it goes too far.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I don't see any legitimate reason in the context for any level of gag order. Other than the name calling the post they are using as an example of inflammatory speech is literally just saying a handful of true things and an allegation of corruption. Looking at the document/court filing I see the same. [...] As far as the idea that his statements are likely to prejudice the jury pool, I see that as highly unlikely. His existence prejudices the jury pool [...].

Strong - I can't see why he should be allowed any more leeway than any other defendant. Any other defendant would be looking at spending his pre-trial period in detention...

Some - She has to be careful about what she can limit, but she definitely should place some limits o...
