Why did a fighter jet briefly go missing?

Source: Government Accountability Office

  1. Summary
On Monday evening military officials located the debris of an F-35B Joint Strike Fighter jet that went missing on Sunday. The jet's location was temporarily unknown after a Marine Corps pilot ejected himself from the plane due to an unknown "mishap." The pilot is safe.

Before the debris field was located, Joint Base Charleston urged members of the public to reach out if they had "any information" on the missing jet's location, leading local Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican, to ask "how in the hell" a fighter jet could have gone missing. It was believed possible for the jet to have continued flying on autopilot after the pilot ejected himself. The jet's transponder was not working, complicating search efforts.

One expert told Breaking Defense that the F-35's stealth technology may have made the missing jet more difficult to find. An F-35B jet costs about $135.8 million and the overall F-35 program is the Department of Defense's most expensive weapon system. The DOD estimates the program will cost $1.7 trillion over the course of its lifetime.

Should members of Congress have to wear formal clothing?

406 votes, 52 comments

Context: Senate majority leader orders that informal dress code not be enforced.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - It's a formal duty, leading the country, and should be approached as such. They recognize this to the degree that everyone not a senator (all aids and staffers) still must maintain the dress code. That this was relaxed only for senators themselves shows that it's not a change in environmental gravitas but rather some other reason.
