"Depth is not something we live in that’s comfortable and familiar. We have to go somewhere else to find that extra dimension."

In her early days of authorship, writer and physician Lydia Kang faced a challenge in crafting her characters: She couldn’t close her eyes and see clearly through theirs. In her words, “If you slapped a corset on me and put me on Broadway in 1850 in the late summer, I still wouldn’t know how to act or what to do.” She then began exploring her written figures outside of the boundaries around their everyday lives, considering: What mistakes would they make? What lies are they willing to tell? What pain do they feel?

Only in pushing them to uncomfortable depths and different dimensions did she “uncover the humanity they didn’t know they had.” The idea of uncovering the unfamiliar in artistic practice threads through her talk for CreativeMornings/Omaha.
