Email courses. I’m sure you’ve heard of them.

Some folks in my circle are raving about them as one of those must-have assets every creator needs.

“The easiest way to get more email subs”

“My top selling digital product”

But are they worth the hype?

To find out, I partnered with Will Steiner, founder of Master the Email-Based Course to bring you this mini deep-dive on Email-Based Courses and why I think you should build one.

What exactly is an email course?

As Will from Email-Based Course (EBC from now on) puts it, an email course is:

• An automated sequence of emails
• That delivers an impactful learning experience

• Over a meaningful period of time (4+ days)

Simple, right? But let’s dive a bit deeper.

Are email-based courses right for you? Use cases

An EBC is an asset that works for you and your business 24/7.

It’s automated, runs on its own, and allows you to build a deeper relationship with your audience, as email is a 1:1 communication channel.

On paper, it sounds good, but is it right for you and your business?

Based on my research and experience going through Will’s course, I have observed three different uses for an email course:

• As a lead magnet to get new subscribers
• As a standalone paid product
• As a demand-generation tool for high-ticket offers

Daniel developed a 5-day email course that he uses as a lead magnet for his newsletter. It covers the 5 mistakes that cost you at least $10,000/year in sales and how to fix them.

Nate sells an email course on design for non-designers. His 20-day program shows you 20 Figma short lessons so you can upgrade your designs even if you’re not a designer.

→ Flip the Script on Connected Leadership by Andrew Barry (High-ticket offer)

This is an email-based course for leaders looking to develop novel and adaptive thinking. It’s 10 lessons packed into 10 days, divided into categories.

Andrew sells high-ticket services and he uses this course as an entry door to his top offer.

Should you build an email-based course?

If you are looking to:

• Get more customers to your high-ticket offers
• Test a new concept fast
• Add a lower-tier paid product to your portfolio
• Or rapidly increase your subscriber count

Then yes, an email course is probably a good idea.

I think the best thing about email courses is that they’re evergreen. Whether you want it to get more subs or to sell your other offers, it works for you when you are not working.

In addition, it builds on what I believe to be the most important platform for any creator: email.

Email-based course Pro tips from Will Steiner

If you are set on building an email course, here are a few pro tips I stole from Will:

• Charge something for it, even if it’s just $1. People don’t appreciate free stuff. Plus, charging for it pre-qualifies intent and increases engagement.
• Repurpose your course content. The cool thing about building an email course is that you’ll be creating a ton of content. Repurpose the best bits on social media and use them as a magnet to drive more people to the email course.
• Test everything before releasing. Put yourself, your friends and your family through the course before releasing. It has some moving parts so something is likely to break.

The other thing I loved about Will’s course is that you can fast-forward to the next email lesson with a click of a button, unlike most other courses that require you to wait one day.

This allowed me to move through the course at my own pace.

Plus, Will did something very smart with it: Whenever you click the fast-forward button, you’ll receive the next email after about 20-30 seconds.

But, instead of just making you wait, Will takes you to a “Transition” page, where he shares a short story about himself.

I think this is a very cool way to increase engagement with the audience while entertaining them until the email arrives. Definitely steal-worthy.

Okay Alex, you convinced me. How can I build mine?

There is no way I can cover how to build it in this email because that would take a lot of time!

Plus, there’s a few technicalities that are better explained by an expert.
