What? UX?

Yep, you read that right. I partnered with Peter Ramsey from Built From Mars (an excellent UX blog & newsletter) for this week’s tips and steals.

Even though UX and content creation don't immediately have a huge overlap, when you look more closely, they absolutely do.

So here are they are! Hope you find them valuable!

#1 - Frame the silent benefits

The main benefit of YouTube Premium is that you don’t see ads. But after the user has watched 100 hours of ad-free content, they may even forget that there were ads.

And that’s a problem, because you want your users to remember that they’re still getting value from your service.

So, try copying YouTube, and present the ‘silent benefits’ that they’ve received in a dashboard.

​Loom also do this to frame how much time you’ve saved by not having calls or meetings.

🕵️‍♂️ How to steal it as a creator When people buy a digital product, they are buying a better version of themselves. That often involves either generating more money or more time (or both). Try to find a way to showcase these silent benefits ON your product. For example: if you sell a template, add a short note at the top of it that says how much time they are saving doing the task by using that template Remember, focus on time and money and make those “silent benefits” louder!

#2 - Make your users champions

If you sell a product that is inherently single-player, try copying Superhuman.

They’ll compare your usage (at answering emails) to their entire user base, and gamify the process of building habits. In this instance, the habit of reaching ‘inbox zero’.

Spotify also do this with their annual ‘unwrapped’ breakdown, where they’ll show if you’re in the top 1% of listeners for a particular artist or song.

🕵️‍♂️ How to steal it as a creator Give a shout-out to your top listeners, viewers, or readers. By making them feel like “your champions” and showing off their special place in your content ecosystem, you create a tighter-knit community, boost loyalty, and keep them coming back for more. Someone who leverages this well is Chenell Basilio from Growth in Reverse, where she has a small section to shout reader’s newsletters 👇

#3 - Leveraged scarcity

Airbnb will let you know if a property is usually booked, leveraging the scarcity effect.

People will feel pressured to make a decision (e.g., to purchase an item, or sign up to a trial), if they believe that there is a limited supply, or a limited time to act.

🕵️‍♂️ How to steal it as a creator Scarcity is one of the strongest psychological triggers to get people to buy. A great practical example is this “Price Hike” strategy that Steph Smith did when she released her Doing Content Right book, where she played with unit scarcity 👇 Steph started selling the product at a cheap price, but the price increased as more units were sold. This generates a nice loop because the more sales you get, the more social proof you build for the product + the sense of scarcity. ”I need to buy now or the price goes up”
